Here's the problem with not drinking the beer:

He doesn't truly know if it's going to work. Does he have enough beer to create enough urine?? Don't know. So, say he tries to simply pour the beer on the snow, three problems:

a) Has to waste body heat to heat beer up
b)Has to endure being buried in snow, sober
c) If it doesn't work, then he dies sober... and that would suck

you have to waste your body heat to heat it up if you drink it too. Although you get some caloric value from it. However, the alcohol would melt the snow better than urine would, perhaps.

also, the more alcohol you have in your blood, the worse you do in the cold.

Well, urination is just more fun than pouring beer on things.
