This is a question for the Juniors and Seniors. What type of calculator do you reccomend for your specific major?
I am a EE freshmen right now, and I am curious as to whether I should upgrade my Ti-83+ to a Ti-89. I am told that different majors usually require different calculator models.
At least go with a TI-89, if not something higher. Although, depending on your major, you might look into getting an HP-49G or something. I'm not a EE, so I don't know if it would help you more than a TI or not.

Defenitly an TI-89. I prefer the old style TI-89 to the new Silver TI-89's myself but thats because i'm used to the old style. The calculus functions of the 89 really come in handy when you need to check yourself on a calc test.
BTW i'm a sophomore GE major....but i'll be done with math after this semester, then a couple more BE classes and life will be good.
I love my TI-89TI. I've had teacher talk about the differences and basically the HP has one thing going but sucks at everything else. Not sure what the one thing was though.
Physics, EE, and CpE major.

The HPs are good with matrix stuff, so I've heard. I still will take my TI-89 Titanium over any HP. You know you have nerd friends when they're jealous of your calculator. You know you're a nerd if you give your calculator a nickname, like "Pimp-tanium".

I love how the federal government and the stuff I did in high school paid for my TI-89 Titanium. I owned an HP-49, and it actually did have a couple halfway redeeming qualities. The HP Equation Writer did come in very handy. But there's no way I could wait on that 4-Mhz processor to do a 100,000 step summation to estimate an integral. That took 20 minutes. It would also do limit analysis, which was cool. And it beeps. But all in all I like the TI-89 better.

What ever model you get just try and get one that you can use on the FE exam your senior year. The HP they used to push onto everyone when I started can not be used on the FE exam anymore.
IF you just want to waste a weekend of your senior year filling in circles then get any calculator you want.

Ummm.... I don't think you can use any calculator that has text editing capabilities on the FE. This includes calculators down to the Ti-83's (perhaps Ti-82's as well). So take MechE's advise if and only if you would be happy with a solar powered abacus.

Im a mining engineer and I use the TI-89. Very handy for making tables, and pretty much does anything I would ever need in the field. I would get a 92 if it could fit into my pocket comfortably.
